The collision of three Norfolk Southern trains in Pennsylvania early this month highlights the shortcomings of the automated braking system that was created to prevent such crashes. Not only was the system incapable of stopping the second train before it smashed into the back of a stopped train, but it also couldn't stop the third train. Congress required railroads to develop the positive train control system after a deadly 2008 collision between a Metrolink commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, California. Norfolk Southern's safety practices have been in the spotlight since one of its trains derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023. The report also didn't say whether there were any curves or hills that made it hard for the crew to see the stopped train.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is buying the remaining 20% of the Pilot truck stop business it does not already own from the Haslam family, the two announced on Tuesday. Berkshire confirmed it now owns all of Pilot Travel Centers. The sale follows the settlement of a lawsuit earlier this month that pitted Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam against Buffett’s Berkshire over the Pilot stake's value. The 2017 agreements also gave Pilot Corp. an annual 60-day opportunity, beginning Jan. 1 this year, to sell its remaining 20% interest in PTC to Berkshire. The sale price would be calculated using PTC’s earnings in the prior year.

Jimmy Haslam, CEO of Pilot Flying J. and Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. The Haslam family on Tuesday said its Pilot Corporation had closed the sale of its remaining 20% ownership interest in truck-stop giant Pilot Travel Centers to Berkshire Hathaway . That settlement avoided what was scheduled to be a two-day trial beginning Jan. 8, with testimony from Berkshire Hathaway executive Greg Abel, the designated successor to company CEO Warren Buffett. CNBC has requested comment from Berkshire Hathaway, which in a regulatory filing last year listed the Haslams' noncontrolling interest in Pilot Travel Centers at a value of around $3.2 billion. PTC is the largest operator of travel centers in North America, with more than 750 locations under the Pilot and Flying J brands.

Berkshire Hathaway settled a billion-dollar lawsuit with the Haslam family over how Berkshire accounted for the value of Pilot Travel Centers, which would affect the price paid in a forced buyout of the family's remaining stake in that truck-stop giant, both sides said Sunday night. The Haslam family and its Pilot Corp. in the suit filed this fall alleged that Berkshire Hathaway improperly adopted a form of accounting of the value of Pilot Travel Centers that would have led to a sharply lower price Berkshire would pay to acquire the family's remaining 20% stake in PTC. Berkshire in turn had accused Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam of offering payments to PTC executives to boost the value of the company so that his family would get a bigger buyout from Berkshire, which controls PTC. The Haslam family and Pilot Corp. strongly denied those claims. Berkshire and Pilot Corp. in similar press statements Sunday night said that they had reached an agreement to fully settle the Delaware Chancery case.

REUTERS/Amit Dave/File PhotoPARIS/DELHI, June 28 (Reuters) - Indian aerospace suppliers see record jet orders by the country's top two carriers boosting domestic parts manufacturing and aircraft repairs, but argue the government must do more to support production. Rising traffic, a search for alternative sourcing to China and orders this month from Air India and IndiGo for nearly 1,000 jets combined have made India a key market for aerospace. CNN —Subaru is recalling 271,694 SUVs because some of them could catch fire. The company is advising owners of some 2019 to 2022 model year Subaru Ascent SUVs to park them outside, away from garages or other structures, and not to leave the vehicles unattended with the engine running. If drivers notice smoke or odors coming from the vehicle’s dashboard or footwell area while driving, Subaru advises them to immediately pull over, turn off the vehicle and call Subaru Roadside Assistance. To fix the recalled vehicles, Subaru dealers will inspect the parts and, if needed, replace the ground bolt, ground wire and connectors. Companies Duke Energy Corp FollowNov 4 (Reuters) - Duke Energy Corp (DUK.N) expects to receive significant tax incentives from the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act , the American company said on Friday. Duke said it will benefit from several parts of the law -- which took effect in August -- including production tax credits (PTC) for nuclear and solar power and investment tax credits for energy storage. Duke also said it could have about 13 to 17 gigawatt (GW) of connected solar power over the next 10 years, with each gigawatt of solar equal to about $60 million in annual gross PTCs. In addition, Duke said it had the potential to make $2.5 to $4.5 billion of storage investments over the next 10 years to qualify for 30% storage investment tax credits. Duke said those credits would provide its customers with a more affordable transition to clean energy.
First Solar stock still has room to run even after advancing more than 60% this year, according to Bank of America. Analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith raised his price objective on First Solar, and reiterated a buy rating on the Arizona-based company, after its latest earnings results. Some investors have expressed concern that growth expectations for First Solar may be overdone after the solar stock surged more than 60% this year. Still, Bank of America remains bullish on First Solar, as it is "almost fully booked through 2026," and expands its "competitive positioning" overseas. If anything, we expect FSLR to leverage bridge financing to ensure near-term liquidity, which FSLR will pay down following PTC receipt.
